Document Converter App Reviews
I have years worth of AppleWorks and ClarisWorks files that I need access to from time to time. Before discovering Document Converter, I had to either 1) have a 10.6 partition on my Mac to boot into, then copy and paste the contents of the opened CW file into a MS Word document, save it on a flash drive, then reboot back into OS X 10.10 to keep working, or 2) keep an older dedicated Mac running 10.6 to access the CW file (then copy, paste…). For me, Document Converter is close to priceless. What a great time saver!
Don’t buy that
AppleWorks files are not really supported. Output files are can’t be opened.
While I purchased this app about a year ago to convert old Word 1, WriteNow, and Claris Works files and it has done fantastically with all of those, I have also found that it does a far better job of converting NeoOffice/Open Office .odt and .ott files than saving them as .docx in NeoOffice and opening them in Word does. It is superior to what the performance of my no-longer-suported DataViz MacLink Plus was and is so reasonably priced that I truly never thought that would be the case when I first bought it…but it was so reasonably priced that I bought it anyway and am amazed every time I open it by just how good it is for how little I spent!
I have been running around in circles for years trying to develop work arounds for my father to save onto AppleWorks documents that he created years ago. Like to drive me crazy that he would not update OS X just to preseve his documents. A 2008 MacBook stuck in Leopard. Upgraded to El Capitan, updated all apps, installed Office 2016, Upgraded the drive to 500 GB and RAM from 2 GB to 8 GB then realized I had not done anything for the AppleWork docs. Document Converter to the rescue! :-) Settings set to keep creation dates and include .cwk in the file name. Magic!
I bought this because it said it would convert (Korean) Hangul Word Processing Docs. I attempted to convert some and the and the App simply, and repeatedly crashes.
When converting old (1995) Apple Works or Claris Works files into word documents, those documents did not open properly in Word. The error message reads: “The Open XML file [name of document] cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. Details, Unspecified error, Location: 2” Sigh.
My computer is a IMAC, and operating systems upgrades had cost me the ability to open my hundreds of cwk files. After searching the ‘Net, I found the Document Converter at the Apple Apps Store, only $9.99! After downloading it, unfortunately, it would not convert cwk files to rtf. But fear not . . . After notifying the manufacturer, RootRiseTech.Com, of my problem, they walked me through the step-by-step solution to the problem, which was a problem on my computer, and not their software. And they responded to my help request the very same day! This app is very simple to use, and is amazingly fast in converting files. Well worth the price! There was a second problem a week or so later, seemed to be the same error message. I contacted the manufactuer, and they found the problem to once again was mainly associated with my computer, related to where the converted file would be placed. Couple of days later, they came out with a updated version that fixed the conflict with my computer. These people have a great product, and immediate response to your problems from their tech department. I highly recommend this Document Converter!
not a lot of help for this Macintosh user not intuitive enough, nor well enough documented for a lot of complex information; i.e., a steep learning curve
So I have tons of old files going back to 1987. I have tried over the years (once in 2004, once in 2009) to use DataViz MacLink Plus to migrate the files. The results were spotty and I lost the original creation date of the files when it upgraded. I used Document converter to convert a bunch of old Office files. It handled Word and Excel incredibly well. It had trouble now and then with Powerpoint losing formatting on idiosycratic graphics. Naturally it couldnt open the old Microsoft Chart files and didnt handle some early MacWrite files - however - using Basilisk II I was able to access some of these odds and ends. My suggestion is to point it to a directory and run it - then double check the results before deleting the old files. Note you need to add the proper extensions to some files for it to recognize them. Thus armed with Renamer (a handy utility that easily adds file extensions) and this application I saved hours of opening files and resaving them. I really cant understand the review that complains about the lack of documentation. You dont need it. The interface is well designed. The results were superior to MacLinkPlus and the price is a fraction of what I paid for that back in the day. Worth it.
As a long time Mac user, but no “techie”, I had to deal with old .cwk file formats in a Yosemite age. Hundreds of .cwk files were dead as doornails to me until I bought Document Converter a few days ago. Intuitive and easy to use; letters and spreadsheets are quickly translated, either as single files or batches, into current and once again readable and useable spreadsheets. I regained my “Archives” as a reliable resource and am delighted to have bought Document Converter, a very useful and well polished application. TGL v.1.2 September 28. 2015
Document Converter was a lifesaver when converting hundreds of files from my previous word processor to the one I now use. It converted everything accurately and faster than I thought possible. I am impressed!
Very happy. I converted several hundred old Mac word processing program from iWork and Pages… Was a breeze and got in done in less than 2 hours while watching TV… As a writer I was extremely aggravated that Apple failed to create an automatic conversion of its own word processing in its own system. Shame on Apple but I have to give Document Converter 5 Stars. Can’t beat the deal and the work it saved. Previously I was opening documents on my old Mac, copying and pasting into emails and emailing documents to myself to paste into new documents. Grateful for a smooth process!
I had some old AppleWorks files (probably version 5 if not earlier) and before buying the software, I contacted the developer to ask if he’d try converting one of the files before I invested in the software. He replied by return, I sent the file, and moments later, it was converted! Have now used it on the rest. Worth every cent just to recover a series of family trees that span two hemispheres and around 10 generations of family history. The developer is very responsive, and I appreciated his help. The conversions do need a little editing (text boxes need re-sizing, or fonts down-sizing) but that’s a minor inconvenience and I don’t think there’s anything can be done about that (fonts have changed over the years). I heartily recommend.
This thing really works. I thought my teaching files from the 1980’s were a loss. They were Clarisworks files…..ancient. This program converts them almost instantly. Thank you!
Works perfectly

Retrieves treasures!
I had all but given up on being able to readily access my old ClarisWorks documents from back in the 90's. They appear as chaotic "exec" Text Edit files. But with Document Converter, I can quickly open them in the original format! So grateful!
A life-saver
I had hundreds of Clarisworks files from on my Mac - a number from a company I used to manage - and culdn't read them. More to the point, I couldn't pass them on to others who needed to review them. Documeent Converter was a life-saver. I added ".cwk" to each file name (tedious, but effective), dragged them in batches into Document Converter, set to retain the original creation and modification date, and it did the conversoins in seconds. It also updated all my ".doc" and ".xls" files to the newer versions. So far I've found only one converted file I couldn't open, but in fairness, I can't be sure that it was in fact a Clarisworks file to begin with. Super pleased!
Document Converter 3.2
Simplicity itself. Intuitive operation across a spectrum of flie types. Could not be easier.
Wonderful App
Document Converter is everything I have been looking for since Micrsoft no longer provided a converter.
Great app
I'm finding many written pieces I thought were long gone, things from the times of actual floppy disks. It's amazing.
Document Converter
I only wanted to open one very old file that had out of date software, but This app converted EVERY Excel file on my computer to itself, which I did not want. Document Converter also has a 'clunky' procedure, more like a Windows app. I requested and got excellent service from Apple Support to REINSTATE my Excel app, which Document Coverter had, without my permission, deleted. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS APP.
Essential...
...if you have thousands of ClarisWorks files. The current Mac OS does not support Rosetta, thus cannot open any .cwk files. This is the best I've found for converting.
Enjoyable
It is great to recover some oldies. Thank you very much for your knowledge.
Essential
Very valuable to me, was able to bring up old documents that had a lot of personal value.
Not good on old AppleWorks draw files!
You can keep the 15 bucks… but I am NOT using this program because it scrambles old AppleWorks draw files…. My IMAC is now at the point that Microsoft keeps telling me to upgrade my OS… but I am running 10.13.6…. We need programs like this that WORK!! I have taken screenshots of the before and after… (car wreck.) Andy Harper.
Great App So Far
Reminds me of the old MacLink Deluxe file converter. I just started using it to convert old WriteNow files. Will update after more use.
William
I am thankful for this app that I have used successfully for years to convert old Clarisworks and Appleworks files to today's Mac Pages app.
Very powerful trouble free app
Hundreds of Work Perfect files were rapidly converted with the excellent utility without any problems. Highly recommended!
The best
Anyone of a certain age will have a lot of work saved in various programs that have gone the way of the dodo. And anyone of a certain age will have converted some of those old files using programs that are now defunct themselves. Tempus fugit! Document Converter is the best converter I've ever used, it's simple, swift, fail-safe, and a great ally in the war against the attritions of time.
I am amazed at how well this worked
I had several hundred of my mom's genealogy files from 1984 to 2004 and had tried a half a dozen other applications which produced unsatisfactory results. Most apps extracted the text, but no formatting or fonts or metadata. Leading whitespace was usually awful since my mom used an inconsistent mixture of tabs and spaces with unknown tab stops. I had pretty much given up after writing my own code to extract just the text when I stumbled across this app while looking for a Claris Works converter in the Mac App Store. I risked purchasing this app and within a a few minutes had all of the old MS Word 4 and 5 and Claris Works and a few misc formats all accurately converted, including the metadata, where available, such as the date it was edited, time spent editing, etc. I am very very surprised and pleased.
Excellent, very helpful, app
I use it for .doc to .docx and .xls to .xlsx conversion. Very fast, accurate and the interface is very intuitive. A pleasure to work with. The only thing that would make it better for me is for it to recognize the file type without the file extensions. I have a large number of files that I have to manually add the extensions I had removed some years ago as Apple recognizes the files without them.
When it works, Great
I have been using this to convert 100s of documents. If you receive any error, like 1 file of 150 couldn't be processed, the other 149 were not processed either. It also doesn't seem to like more than 300 docs at a time. I would love to drop files in the app and be sure that they all converted correctly. Instead, I do small sets and spot check, and occasionally find entire batches weren't processed. But it does work 90% beautifully and even being able to drop 150 files in it and spot check is a bit better than the competition. I just wish I didn't have to double check.
A Life Saver
I have been Teaching College for a long time now. And when computer systems change, courses change, production-software changes and everything gets updated continually, individual documents and handouts sometimes get 'left behind.' This program has been a life saver in bringing course materials back from the dead programs they were creatd with. Great stuff!
Works Great!
It's converting all my old files on Word and Claris Works very smoothly. I like the drag and drop feature, but the interface could stand for a little updating, but still an awesome app. Have not tried on docs with graphics yet.
Principal
The document coverter has 'saved' my life more than once. I am a MAC person and have been forever. At times, I need documents that were created 15 years ago. I simply click the document converter and they make most things available!! My wish is that they would be able to 'convert Apple Works. Keep up the good work...
Everything and More
This is one app that really lives up to it's billing. I've converted 'Claris Works', 'Apple Works', 'Unix executible', and 'WordPerfect®' files using Document Converter. It has yet to be unable to open any file I've thrown at it. What's more, it's lightning fast, simple and very intuitive. I don't know where this has been during my Mac years, but I am sorry that I didn't find it sooner. It could have converted several files that I gave up on and deleted. Yes it's Catalina friendly and what's more, I'm running it on a beta 'Big Sur' and having 0 problems. I can't say enough good things about Document Converter!
amazing!!!
This program did everything they said it would do. I needed to convert files from a 1998 mac over to Catalina and it did it flawlessly, awesome program.
Makes life much easier
This makes my life so much easier. I can batch convert dozens of compositions from text to Word in seconds with minimal effort. Thank you!
Dave of Little Rock -- Amazing.
Converted so many old Word 6.0 Office.doc files in just a few short moments. So much faster than by hand I feel saved from the labor otherwise requred to open them in a shareware app one-by-one or loading them separately and doing a "Save As" conversion to the current Office.docx format. Did my .txt and .rtf files I had saved in all the child directories. Thanks folks. I really appreciate you.
Converted all files quick and easy
I was tasked with upgrading my mother-in-laws comptuer, little did I know ALL her documents were in a no longer supported Works WPS format. Tried several "converters" and this one converted all my mother-in-laws files quickly and easily from Works WPS to Word Docx. Wish I had tried ths one first, would have avoided a lot of frustration.
Almost works!
I had a bunch of business-related files from when it was way easier to use Appleworks / Clarisworks than dork around with the then-current version of Word. These files have been inaccessible for a while, so I thought this might be the ticket. It appears it doesn't handle all the file types correctly, as they will go through the conversion and yield a blank file. I then discovered that LibreOffice (free!) does a better job on these old files! I'm letting the developer keep the $14 to encourage him / her / them to improve the software.
Nothing for Mac documents
I got this to convert some very old Mac documents, and the description said there were IOS compatible aspects. Not so
Crashed and Not Very Configurable
I purchased this one after the first app (made by the same people) kept crashing. This one crashed everytime too. Not happy that they got my money twice!
Simple and Excellent
I have a simple comment if you are wondering whether or not to get this app: Get it! You can rely on it to work properly and I am sure you will enjoy the simple and effective user interface. Document Converter is a well-built app that does what you expect without any frills or complicated steps. The icon is also well done and looks great in the Dock, which to me counts for something in these days of sometimes-horrible icons. Thank you RootRise Technologies!
Biggest Waste of Money
Bought it, used it three times, received a jumbled up mess converting the cwk files to docx and wish that I never spent my money. This may work if your document has no images, but it failed miserably with my mixed-use documents. The beauty of Apple Works (and Claris Works before that) was that it was incredibly easy to combine written material with painting and drawing images for a wonderful finished project. This app reminded me why I almost never purchase applications without trying them first.
Great utility, but with one minor glitch...
Setup is easy and it does bulk conversions quickly and cleanly. I’d give it five stars except that in a whole bunch of the files I converted from Clarisworks and Appleworks the last line of the file was for some reason cut off.
Horrible
On OSX 10.12, this app crashes constantly and is vertually useless
Exactly the tool I needed, AND IT WORKS!!!
Great tool. Works great. User interface is a little old-school and could use some beatification but that does not affect the fact the program does exactly what it says it can do. I would like to see the option of having tags copied to converted files. Thank you so much for witting this program. I searched very hard to find a simple tool to do batch conversion from xls to xlsx ( a frequent task I need to complete to input fies into an analysis program). It amazed me how difficult it was to find a program to do this and how few are availble. I would suggest you push to advertise your program with search terms as finding it was not easy. I also noticed you have written other programs to convert to PDF formats. It ouwld be nice to see a combined tool with a fresh interface. I would be happy to upgrade!
Fast, easy and doesnt require internet uploading
I was a little worried that this application, like some others, would require me to upload my files to a remote server to do the conversion. I sent the developers a quick question since I couldnt find any documentation about required interenet connectivity on their support website. They responded within 24 hours that no internet connectivty is required to use the app after the initial download is complete. So I purchased the app, downloaded it, turned off WiFi, and proceeded to convert a large number of files from .doc to .docx. The tool worked great.
Amazing! Wow Really Works!

Finally, AppleWorks files restored!

Does exactly what I wanted it to do
I highly recommend this app. I converted 646 old Appleworks files in less than 10 minutes. Here’s how: 1. Locate all .cwk files using Spotlight. 2. Choose the export options in the software (.doc, .xls, etc.,) I set the destination path to be the same as the source, and chose to maintain creation and modification dates. 3. Drag and drop the Spotlight search findings into the software and click Export All. In a couple of minutes it was finished. I dug deep into some random folder structures, and there sat a .doc or .xls file next to the .cwk file with the same date - every time. The only hangup I had was .docx files were not able to be read due to an xml error. I don’t know if that’s because I’m on an old machine or if it’s a software glitch.
